OAW Talks - Cathy Smith

This talk will provide an overview of the temporary or meanwhile occupation of urban redevelopment sites, drawing from examples in Australia and the UK - where it has become a popular property management tool. These examples will be interspersed with some student work from a 2018 studio exploring meanwhile uses and sites in Ottawa. The talk concentrates on the potential benefits and challenges for communities.

BIO:

Cathy Smith is an Australian registered Australian architect, interior designer, and Senior Lecturer in Interior Architecture at UNSW Sydney. Operating at the nexus of industry and academia, she is a passionate advocate for policies and practices promoting inclusion in the built environment. Her research and teaching focuses on creative placemaking, meanwhile property use, DIY procurement and urban inequality. She was the recipient of the inaugural Turnbull Foundation Women in Built Environment scholarship, a Richard Rogers Fellow (Harvard University GSD, Fall 2018), and Visiting Professor at Carleton University (Winter 2019).
